Portofino, April 25, 2025
Light weather conditions in the Gulf of Tigullio marked the opening day of the Regate di Primavera. A southerly breeze of about 5–6 knots, flat seas, and a beautiful sunny day set the scene for the Race Committee to start the first race — an approximately 8-mile coastal course — after observing a minute of silence before the start.
At 12:05, with a single start for both categories (IRC and Open), the regatta got underway. The foiling maxi FlyingNikka did not find the ideal conditions to unleash its full power on the foils and sailed in displacement mode for the entire race. This left room for the big maxis ARCA and Nice to engage in an immediate battle, tacking up the first windward leg.
In corrected time, victory went to the Maxi 79 Nice by Marco Malgara, followed by the Mylius 65 Oscar 3 owned by Aldo Parisotto, with the Maxi 100 Arca by Furio Benussi in third place — first across the finish line in real time after 1h19m of racing.
In the Open class, which races in real time without any time correction, the day’s win went to the Frers 53 Moonshine owned by Stefano Brunello, ahead of the Eleva 50 Black Samurai by Giuseppe Porro and the Solaris 58 Shanti by Claudio Cimatti.
Upon returning to port, crews were welcomed with a special gelato delivery from the historic San Giorgio gelateria in Portofino. This evening, a dinner for all participants is planned at Villa Durazzo in Santa Margherita Ligure. Tomorrow, in observance of the Pope’s funeral, racing will be suspended.
