The first appointment of the International Genoa Winter Contest, organized by the Yacht Club Italiano and dedicated to the Optimist class, concluded in Genoa, with the participation of over 150 sailors divided into Divisions A and B.
The event opened with a first day marked by favorable conditions, with a Scirocco wind at around 6 knots, which allowed one race to be completed for both divisions.
The second day, however, was characterized by strong winds, with Tramontana exceeding 20 knots: Division A managed to complete three races, while Division B remained ashore due to conditions deemed excessive. At the end of the day, the provisional standings saw three sailors in the lead on 5 points: Gianluca Zorzettig (SN Pietas Julia), with two first places and a third, Alessandro Antonio Menghini (CV Trasimeno), and Roman Vyevyenko (Fraglia Vela Riva), both with one first and two second places.
On the third and final day, the Race Committee set the first start at 9:00 a.m., taking advantage of the remaining Tramontana, gradually easing. The program was completed with three races for Division B and two races for both fleets in Division A.
The overall victory in Division A went to Roman Vyevyenko (Fraglia Vela Riva), first with the series (3, 2, 2, 1, 5, 2), ahead of Gabriele Burlando (Yacht Club Italiano), second with (6, 1, 4, 4, 3, 3), and Alessandro Antonio Menghini (CV Trasimeno), third with (2, 2, 2, 1, 9, 14).
In Division B, the win was claimed by Giulio Calligaris (SN Pietas Julia), first with (1, 1, 3, 2), followed by Swiss sailor Carlo Milan, second with (2, 5, 1, 5), and Alberto Fiorella (Circolo della Vela Muggia), third with (3, 9, 5, 1).
The International Genoa Winter Contest will continue on February 21–22 with the second event on the schedule, which will see the ILCA fleets take to the water.
