The Cup is dedicated to the memory of Luigi Mino Poggi, a prominent figure in international sailing from the early 1930s and a passionate member of the Yacht Club Italiano. Alongside his brother Enrico, he was among the best Genoese sailors of the time, distinguishing himself in the 6 Metre, 8 Metre and Star classes. He won Olympic gold at the 1936 Kiel Games aboard Italia, marking the first Olympic victory in Italian sailing, and also took part in the 1948 Olympics in the 6 Metre class. He went on to enjoy a long international racing career, always characterized by elegance, technical mastery and a deep passion for the sea.
