The Coppa Poggi is dedicated to the memory of Mino Poggi, a prominent figure in international sailing from the early 1930s and a passionate member of the Yacht Club Italiano. Together with his brother Enrico, he was among the best Genoese sailors of his time, excelling in the 6 Metre, 8 Metre, and Star classes. He won Olympic gold at the 1936 Kiel Games aboard Italia, marking Italy’s first-ever Olympic sailing victory, and also competed at the 1948 Olympics in the 6 Metre class. Poggi went on to enjoy a long and successful international career, always distinguished by his elegance, technical skill, and love for the sea.
For over sixty years, the Coppa Poggi has honored his legacy and values, becoming a symbol of continuity between generations and a commitment to nurturing young athletes. Once again, the event combined tradition and innovation, reaffirming the Yacht Club Italiano’s dedication to promoting maritime culture.
