World sailing offshore personal survival training course 2025

A course that is mandatory to participate in offshore races, but one that every responsible and serious sailor should take.
A skipper must understand that stepping on board means taking responsibility for a crew and must know how to act in real emergency situations that endanger the safety of the boat and its guests.
At the end of the course, participants will receive the World Sailing certification required for offshore racing.

Program:

The course is structured over two days.

Saturday: Two classroom-based theoretical sessions.
Topics covered:
  • Offshore Special Regulations 6.01
  • Responsibility of the person in command
  • Personal and collective safety equipment: correct use and maintenance
  • Life raft: how to choose and use it
  • Man overboard and lifelines
  • Onboard emergencies: water, fire, loss of steering
  • Boat preparation and equipment
  • Storm sails
  • Medical emergencies and hypothermia

Sunday: Practical water exercises, including life raft deployment, swimming and survival techniques, and a final test for the issuance of the World Sailing certificate, valid for 5 years.

The life raft exercise will take place at sea or in a pool, depending on weather conditions.

At the end of the course, a practical final exam will be held, and participants will receive a certificate valid for offshore racing and for obtaining the professional title of Second-Class Officer.
