Understanding the pros and cons of the skipper profession means diving into the daily life of this professional. The skipper is the captain of recreational sailing vessels.
They bear several responsibilities, including operating the vessel and managing everything related to organization, maintenance, safety, communication with maritime authorities, interactions with the guests on board, and with the owning company if the vessel has been chartered.
To become the skipper of a recreational boat, holding a boating license is not enough—you must pass a specific exam at the Harbour Master's Office to obtain the title of Second Class Officer.
A crucial step is the successful completion of specific courses such as basic firefighting, survival and rescue, personal safety and responsibilities, and first aid.
The Yacht Club Italiano can support you in taking this important step by advising where to begin and how to obtain the necessary qualification.
The first step is undoubtedly the “SKIPPER COURSE.”
The course follows a clear program designed to teach how to manage a boat properly—not only sail trimming, but also maneuvering, mooring, anchoring, VHF radio communication, equipment maintenance, and handling breakdowns, in order to be ready for any situation. At the same time, it aims to ensure the comfort and satisfaction of the guests on board, offering expertise, knowledge, qualified professional staff, and suitable facilities.
This is a comprehensive course for those who feel they do not yet have the practical skills required to act as a skipper and want to complete their training to enter the recreational boating industry by developing specific competencies and the right professional mindset for the sector. The course includes a one-week stay on board, from Saturday to Saturday, with both coastal and offshore sailing.
