On 3rd July 1997, the Regata della Giraglia set sail from Le Lavandou, for the last time last century. It was a particularly difficult race, and only 15 of the 46 boats that started crossed the finish line: all the others were forced to retire by a furious Gulf of Leon; the race was won by Mascalzone Latino.

This marked the beginning of a new era for the Regata della Giraglia, and the collaboration with Rolex. As of the 46th edition in 1998, the regatta has been renamed the "Giraglia Rolex Cup" and the start moved to Saint Tropez, where the new format involves three days of coastal regattas. The spirit of the competition is unchanged, and remains fully compatible with the values of the Rolex brand. Since then, the relationship between Rolex and the regatta known as the "Queen of the Mediterranean" has intensified year by year, and now more than 200 boats participate, ranging from 35 footers to maxis, with amateur and professional crews brought together by their love of the sea and that unique magic that at the only the Giraglia can offer its participants. The regatta was extremely important for Rolex sailing sponsorship operations as it was the first of a series of classic offshore races that the Swiss company's name has become associated with: Rolex Fastnet Race, Rolex Sydney Hobart, Rolex Middle Sea Race. Every year, Rolex awards the winner of the Giraglia Rolex Cup a Yacht Master chronometer in steel and platinum, while the real time winner receives a Submariner Date in gold and steel.

This year, the SIAD - Bombola d'Oro trophy, organised by the Yacht Club Italiano, celebrates its thirteenth year, and has already become a classic in the sailing season.
This is an essential date for enthusiasts of an exciting class like the Dinghy 12', but also for anyone who loves sailing and the sea. The merit of a prestigious Club, the splendid setting of Portofino, but above all, the atmosphere at the Bombola d'Oro: a stimulating mix of competition and the pleasure of good company. This is a demanding regatta that requires a great deal of preparation and technical skill, yet it also offers competitors the pleasure of shared experiences and emotions, while sailing together with friends who are prepared to help one another if they get into difficulty. This is in no small amount thanks to the boat, the 12’ Dinghy, which was designed 96 years ago in 1913, and has managed to maintain its charm and protect its tradition against implacable technological progress .
